Kenpo X that is part of the classic P90X series is, well, boring. It goes into pretty good detail about how your form should be in order to keep from over-extending your arms and whatnot. But that’s about the only saving grace I see. The intensity is quite low. I suppose that can be welcome at the end of the week, but for many of us that are excited about the program and have a lot of energy on a Saturday is not enough. The block series? Come on!
So what can we do about it? The first thing I recommend is replacing it with a different workout. The Kenpo Cardio Plus workout from the P90X + series. This is a faster paced version of Kenpo. There is a lot more moving around, side to side, with few breaks in between. And when you do get breaks, they’re “Cardio Breaks”. Tony doesn’t stop to explain much. You should have the form down from doing Kenpo X. You don’t have to pick up the whole P90X + series to get the DVD though, you can buy it on it’s own here.
The second thing we can do is add a bit of weight in the form of weighted gloves. I picked up a set of Valero GNAW weighted gloves and it’s made quite a difference during the workout! If you’re really punching, stopping that extra momentum is quite challenging, Backfists and high blocks especially. I told you what I though about them in this post and I still use them every week.
So that’s what today was. Kenpo Cardio Plus. Very sweaty.
